I have grown to hate the word “epic.” At one point it was a fantastic word to describe a colossal event. However, 20 somethings have overused the word epic as bad as their older siblings misused the words “the bomb” and “radical.” When one says, “I had an epic taco for lunch,” or “Last night hanging out at Denny’s was epic” they slowly kill the word.
As I reflect on yesterday’s very first Launch Team Meeting I am short of words to describe it. We had an amazing night looking at God’s Word, drinking coffee and dreaming of what can be in our new church community. If I were to call it an epic night, even though I am not, I would want to first see if it fits the word’s definition. Merriam-Webster defines epic as, “extending beyond the usual or ordinary especially in size or scope.” On the surface our gathering did not look as if it extended beyond the usual… especially in size or scope. Nonetheless, there was something extraordinary about it because of the potential of what this community can become. When I look at an enormous oak tree I am amazed, but when I think that that oak tree sprang from a tiny acorn my mind is blown away by God’s creativity. Who would ever guess that something so huge, so beautiful… so epic, could come out of something so small? So, this is why, even though I will contribute to the overuse of the word, last night was truly epic.
